It’s amazing what you can do with so called rubbish these days!
Karl took his barista apron off and armed with his tool kit he was put to the test on the build for both of our stores.
Lewes Road

Then
A former video rental store (yes, remember those?!) we had to completely gut this shop. Stripping it back to all the original fittings there were some interesting finds! An original solid oak floor about 5 layers down, some very useful old scaffold boards and sleepers that we were then able to use in the final fixtures of the shop. The old ceiling joists which we reclaimed and were then able to use to build the customers tables and also the current bar top! Some of the original floor was used to create the back bar.
Much of the original fixtures of the video shop were then upcycled and used to make some of the walls to the kitchen areas back of house. Nothing was spared!
The video drop letterbox can still to be found in the outside wall!
Now
Our first and most established cafe with a real community feel. Popular with the vibrant Brighton student population, the buzz from our first branch has helped to rejuvant the Lewes Road area. It has brought local people together and helped to revive businesses and bring out a more trendy side to this area. The cafe had it’s 5th birthday in February 2019!
The Ernest Beal Blue Plaque
In March 2018 Mojo Lewes Road was honored by receiving a blue plaque on the side of it’s building! Well to be more precise the plaque was awarded to Lt. Ernest Frederick Beal V.C. who previously resided at 148 Lewes Road. Ernest Beal is a important local hero and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his activities during World War 1. The blue plaque sits proudly on our north facing Pevensey Road wall and you will see it regularly decorated with commemorative wreaths.

Queens Road

Then
The site of our Queens Road store has some incredible history attached to it. This part of Brighton being one of the oldest parts, once brought the upper class weekend folk into the city fresh off the Brighton Belle from London. In 1878 this building was the first ear, nose and throat hospital in Brighton. At around the time of the turn of the century this building was used as a barbers.
More recently 23 Queens Road was a former hairdressers and tattoo parlour. With a much larger footprint, this location was a far bigger challenge than our first store. Again, we had to strip this whole site back. We took out two false ceilings which exposed the amazing height of the original ceiling you can now see. On doing this we also found the original shop front, what an unfortunate trend it was to cover up these incredible original features.
The wood panelling which is all around the store is derived from refuse scaffolding which was just about to be put on a tip!
